Q. What should I bring?

A. Everyone has personal needs and preferences. The following covers the essentials. If your unsure drop me a line. contact

  • Polaroid sunglasses, (a cheaper spare pair is also a good idea) a hat (or two), sunscreen, and insect repellent (NB:check with airline regarding carriage of aerosols.)
With regard to clothing, each to their own of course. I recommend light weight shirts and pants. Keep in mind the sun when considering clothing. The temperature on the Cape ranges from 16 - 30 Celsius between May and September, and 24 - 34 Celsius for the balance of the year. A raincoat or spray jacket can be handy.

  • Footwear…sandals (that can get wet), and a pair of old sandshoes is plenty.

  • A camera. Digitals are great, but I also recommend at least one decent disposable underwater camera. They can produce some great shots. Spare
batteries/charger, and plenty of memory card space is also a good idea. I am happy to download photos/video from memory cards to disk on my computer if necessary.

  • A small backpack / bum-bag / day pack for the days in the boat.

  • Tackle. We supply all tackle you require on a replace if lost or damaged basis. You are welcome to bring your own gear of course, but luggage restrictions should be considered if flying. To get an idea of what gear works, check out The Tackle page
NB : Airlines class fishing equipment as ‘sporting goods’ and must be checked in. That is, cannot be ‘carry on’ luggage.

  • Basic toiletries and any personal medication.

  • Any travel documents you may require, e.g. passport, travel insurance papers.

  • A sense of humour and an appetite for adventure!

Q. How much luggage can I bring?

A. Most airlines have a limit of 15-16kg, and charge a fee for excess baggage. If the plane is full, there is a risk that excess baggage may be held over ‘till the next available flight. If you need to bring excess gear there are ways to do it. Contact me for some ideas.

Q. Can I bring my own rods and tackle?

A. Absolutely! There’s nothing better than catching a trophy fish on your favourite stick! Two or three rods is plenty, a light spin and heavy spin combo and a trolling rod is fine. For recommended tackle, rods/reels and line classes, have a look at The Tackle page.

Q. What if I don’t have my own fishing gear?

A. No worries. I have all the gear we need. I use quality Shimano and Penn equipment, which may be used on a replace if lost or damaged basis. For tackle suggestions see The Tackle page.

Q. Is it a problem if I am not an experienced fisherperson?

A. Not at all. Sometimes it can work to your advantage! First time fishos will listen to, and use the advice given to them, and they have no bad habits that need to be corrected. If I had a dollar for the amount of times I’ve seen ‘beginners luck’ do its thing… Up here you can learn more about fishing in a day, than many do in a decade!

Q. What do you provide on the boat during the day?

A. Sunscreen, ice, baits, cold water and all safety gear is all supplied. Accommodated customers will also be provided with lunch and light refreshments. Fishing gear is supplied on a replace if damaged or lost basis.

Q. When is the best time for a fishing trip to Cape York?

A. Tides and moon phases have a major effect on when and where to fish. Before making a booking I will always consider the types of fishing you would like to do, the time frame you have available, and the best corresponding tides/currents. Contact me to discuss timing

Q. What kind of fish can I catch?

A. The variety of fish species in our waters is endless. Check out The Fish page to see a slice of what’s available

Q. Can I take home some fish?

A. Yes! I fish for the future, and a large part of our catch is released. However, you can take home a reasonable amount of fish. Daily bag limits apply, and can be found on The Fish page. I can arrange a foam box to take with you. All fish will be checked by Quarantine prior to departure.

Q. How many people can you fish?

A. The max. number per group is 8 people, with no more than 4 people per boat. Three person groups are ideal. When two boats are used, all activities are conducted together.
See The Packages page for more information.

Q. How long should I stay?

A. How long is a piece of string…? I can cater to what your time allows, from a half day trip, to a 2 week escape. An ideal trip involves 3 - 5 days fishing. Have a look at The Packages page for some ideas, or Contact me to discuss.

Q. Can I do other a activities on my visit to the Cape?

A. Yes. I can assist you with organising 4 wheel drive hire, scenic helicopter flights, local sight seeing tours, historical tours and day trips to Thursday and Horn Islands. You can even have a day off and do nothing!

Q. Can I be contacted while I'm away?

A. Next G mobile service only works in some areas. Limited internet access can be arranged if required

Q. Can we drink alcohol on board the boat?

A. Sure. Responsible drinking while enjoying your day is not a problem.

If you have any special requests or would like some more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
